How to Shop Cyber Monday Like a Pro: 14 Tactics That Actually Save Money

Decide your target price before Cyber Monday (November 30), check it against price history, and confirm the retailer’s return window and price-match rules. Best Buy, for example, does not match competitors from the Thursday before Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday.

The 14 tactics

  1. Write down target prices now. Note today’s price for each item you want. A “deal” is only a deal against a number you recorded.
  2. Shop the early sales. Target’s early Black Friday deals run November 5–7, Best Buy’s from November 6, and Walmart’s first event November 12–15. Adobe’s forecast has discounts up to 14% in early November and up to 21% just before Thanksgiving, against up to 30% during Cyber Week.
  3. Use a price tracker. Tools such as Keepa and CamelCamelCamel chart Amazon price history, so you can see whether a “50% off” price was ever charged.
  4. Distrust unlabeled “was” prices. We label a “was” price only when it was actually charged recently, and call anything else MSRP.
  5. Match the exact model. A lower price on the 55-inch version can remain in search results after you pick the 65-inch. Compare model numbers.
  6. Compare delivered, installed or total prices. Tires, furniture and appliances can change by hundreds of dollars once delivery and installation are added.
  7. Check the price-match rules before you rely on them. See the table below. Several stores suspend matching during the sale.
  8. Know the return window. Holiday windows are longer at some stores and shorter on electronics.
  9. Take screenshots. Capture the cart price, model number and date, which helps if a price adjustment applies.
  10. Check whether the deal needs a membership or card. Walmart+ has early access; Costco requires membership; some tire and carrier offers need a store card or plan.
  11. Read bundle math. A bundle’s claimed saving assumes you want every item at its suggested price.
  12. Stack cashback and card perks last. Cashback portals and card rewards sit on top of the sale price; do not choose a worse price because of a small reward.
  13. Be wary of urgency timers. Early sales repeat, and many retailers refresh deals weekly.
  14. Set a shipping deadline. Order well before carrier cutoffs (below).

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the best Cyber Monday deals?

Set a target price per item in advance, compare the same exact model at two stores, check the return window, and buy on the first day the price hits your target. Early sales have run since November 5–6 at Target and Best Buy.

What is a good Cyber Monday strategy?

Pick three items you actually need, record their prices today, and ignore everything else. Use Black Friday for categories that peak then (TVs, toys, appliances) and Monday for laptops and electronics.

Do Cyber Monday ads show real discounts?

Sometimes. A crossed-out price may be a list price that was rarely charged. Check the product’s recent price history, and treat “was” prices without a stated basis with suspicion.
